In keeping with the MAMAS theme that everyone has something to offer and everyone has things that they need, the MAMAS Gardening Collective invites people to give what they can (land, soil, seeds, time, other resources) and take what they need (vegetables, fruits, friendship, and more).
The collective strives to provide the community ways to achieve food sovereignty and reduce the ill-effects of food insecurity. We offer help and support to the community to make gardening and food production more accessible, local, and decentralized throughout Somerville and Medford.
Any and all are welcome in this endeavor, and you can be a part of it at any level—whether you’d like to harvest some locally-grown vegetables (but didn’t have the space to grow them), or want to offer something that can be of use (yard space, gardening skills, seeds, etc.), or volunteer to manage a garden, and more. MAMAS is working on setting up gardens in many neighborhoods, so fresh produce can be accessible to all, regardless of location or economic status, making it a true community effort.
There are many ways you can be involved, including but not limited to:
Sourcing and/or transporting supplies,
Harvesting food from the gardens, to eat and/or share with neighbors,
Gardening (weeding, watering, planting, etc.) on a regular schedule or
Attending workdays or events on a drop-in basis,
Joining our Slack channel to see events and conversations about gardening
Helping with publicity (designing publicity materials, distributing flyers, telling your friends and neighbors about the project) ,
Becoming a garden manager (coordinating work days and making sure the garden is well taken care of)
Becoming a garden host, hosting a garden in your yard (either as a manager or paired with one)
Becoming a garden coordinator (helping connect new volunteers to gardens and connect supplies to garden managers, answering emails)
We currently hold online meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm on Zoom.
If you would like to attend or are interested in getting involved, please fill out our interest form.
Several of our gardens are open for anyone to visit any time:
Hyperspace Garden (Porter Square): 42 Elm Street, Somerville
Area 52 (Porter Square): Mossland x Elm Street
Sewall Commons (Winter Hill): 36 Sewall Street, Somerville
CrossFit Somerville (Union Square) Pollinator Garden: 35 Prospect Street, Somerville
The locations shown on the map above are approximate to avoid posting hosts' addresses publicly. Most of the gardens are publicly accessible to their neighborhoods but don’t want their addresses broadcast to the world, and some are accessible only to volunteers and require communication with the garden host before going. Email us at mamasgardeningcollective@gmail.com if you’d like us to connect you with specific gardens in your neighborhood.
Don't see a location in your neighborhood? Maybe you could help us start one!
